About Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe is the pencil-and-paper classic: two players, a 3 by 3 grid and a race to line up three marks. X always goes first, and a game takes under a minute. Play the computer at three levels or pass the device to a friend. Between good players every game is a draw, so the real test is the hardest level: Hard never loses. Can you hold it to a draw?

How to play Tic-Tac-Toe

  1. The board is an empty 3 by 3 grid. One player plays X and the other plays O. X always moves first.
  2. Take turns placing your mark in any empty square. You cannot pass, and a mark never moves.
  3. Get three of your marks in a row, across, down or diagonally, and you win at once.
  4. If all nine squares fill and nobody has a row, the game is a draw.
  5. In the next game the other player plays X. Hard never loses. Can you hold it to a draw?
