About Shut the Box

Shut the Box is a traditional dice and arithmetic game. Roll one or two dice, then choose open numbered tiles that add up to the roll. A turn ends when no combination works. The total left open is your score, so low is good. Play one box solo, pass a device among up to six players, challenge three levels of computer opponents, or start an online room. Scores are points only.

How to play Shut the Box

  1. All nine tiles start open. Roll two dice, then shut any distinct open tiles that add up exactly to their total.
  2. Once 7, 8 and 9 are shut, choose one die or two on each roll.
  3. Use every roll that has a valid combination. A roll with no combination ends the turn; add the tiles left open to your score.
  4. Shutting every tile ends that turn at zero. Everyone still gets their turn in the round.
  5. Solo play is one turn. Matches have one, three or five rounds, and the first seat rotates each round. Lowest total wins; equal totals share a place.
