About Liar's Dice

Liar's Dice is the old tavern game of nerve and nonsense. Every player shakes five dice under a cup and peeks only at their own. Then you take turns claiming how many dice of one face sit on the whole table, each claim higher than the last, until someone calls the last one a lie. The cups lift, the dice are counted, and whoever was wrong loses a die. Ones are wild. Play two to six, against the computer at three levels or passing one device around the table.

How to play Liar's Dice

  1. Everyone starts with five dice. Each round, all players roll under their cups and look only at their own dice.
  2. The opener bids a quantity and a face, such as "four 5s": a claim that at least that many dice on the whole table show that face. Ones are wild and count as any face, so nobody bids on 1s.
  3. In turn, each player must raise or challenge. A raise names more dice, or as many dice of a higher face.
  4. A challenge lifts every cup. If the count reaches the bid, the challenger loses a die; if it falls short, the bidder does.
  5. Whoever lost the die opens the next round. A player with no dice left is out, and the last player with dice wins.
