About Dots and Boxes

Dots and Boxes is the pencil-and-paper classic: a grid of dots, two players and one line at a time. Close the fourth side of a box and it is yours, and you draw again. Early on, every line is safe; later, every line hands your opponent something, and the player who understands chains wins. Play the computer at three levels on a small, standard or large grid, or pass the device to a friend.

How to play Dots and Boxes

  1. The board starts as a square grid of dots with no lines. The standard grid has 5 by 5 dots, which makes 16 boxes.
  2. On your turn, draw one line between two dots that are next to each other, across or up and down, where no line exists yet.
  3. If your line completes the fourth side of a box, you claim it and must draw another line. One line can complete two boxes at once; you still draw only one more line.
  4. As soon as you draw a line that completes nothing, your turn ends.
  5. The game ends when every line is drawn. The player with more boxes wins; equal counts are a draw.
