About Spades

Spades is a partnership trick-taking game for four. You and the player across from you bid how many tricks you will take together, and spades always beat every other suit. Make your bid to score ten points a trick; fall short and you lose them. Extra tricks pile up as bags, and ten bags cost a hundred points. Bid nil if you dare to take none at all. Play the computer at three levels, pass the device around, or open a table for friends online.

How to play Spades

  1. Four players in two partnerships, partners sitting across from each other, each get 13 cards. Spades are always trumps.
  2. Starting left of the dealer, everyone bids once: the number of tricks they expect to win, from 0 to 13. A bid of 0 is nil, a promise to win no tricks at all. Partners add their bids into one contract.
  3. The player left of the dealer leads. Everyone must follow the suit led if they can; if not, they may play anything, including a spade. Spades can’t be led until one has been played, unless the leader holds nothing else.
  4. The highest spade wins the trick; with no spade in it, the highest card of the suit led wins. The winner leads the next trick.
  5. A partnership that makes its contract scores 10 a trick bid and 1 for each extra trick, called a bag; one that falls short loses 10 a trick bid. Every 10 bags cost 100 points. A nil scores 100 if the bidder takes no tricks and costs 100 if they take any.
  6. The first partnership to 500 points wins. A partnership that falls to −200 loses.
