About Nim

Nim is one of the oldest strategy games there is: a few heaps of stones, two players and one simple move. On your turn, take as many stones as you like from a single heap. Take the last stone and you win, or switch to the version where the last stone loses. Every position is either won or lost for the player to move, and there is a pattern that tells you which. Play the computer at three levels, or pass the device to a friend.

How to play Nim

  1. The game starts with a few heaps of stones; the classic setup is heaps of 3, 4 and 5.
  2. Players take turns. On your turn, take one or more stones from one heap. You can take a whole heap, but you can never pass.
  3. Last stone wins: whoever takes the last stone wins the game.
  4. Last stone loses: whoever takes the last stone loses the game.
  5. There are no draws. Every move removes a stone, so every game has a winner.
