About 2048

2048 is a sliding-tile number puzzle for one player. Every move slides all the tiles on a 4 × 4 board in one direction, and two tiles with the same number combine into one worth their sum. A new tile drops in after each move, so the board fills up unless you keep combining. Make a 2048 tile to win, then keep going for a higher score. All art, sound and code here are original.

How to play 2048

  1. The game starts with two tiles on a 4 × 4 board. Each new tile is a 2, or now and then a 4.
  2. Choose a direction: up, down, left or right. Every tile slides as far as it can that way.
  3. Two tiles with the same number that collide combine into one tile worth their sum, and the new value is added to your score. A tile made this move can’t combine again in the same move.
  4. After every move that changes the board, a new tile appears in a random empty square. A direction that moves nothing isn’t a move.
  5. Make a 2048 tile to win. You can keep playing for a higher score.
  6. The game ends when the board is full and no two neighboring tiles match.
