About Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy is the classic card game for two. Draw from the stock or take the top discard, then throw one card away, building sets of three or four of a kind and runs of three or more in one suit. Cards that fit no meld are deadwood, and they count against you. Knock when your deadwood totals 10 or less, or hold out for gin with none at all, but beware the undercut. The table arranges your melds for you. Play the computer at three levels, pass the device across the table, or open a table for a friend online.

How to play Gin Rummy

  1. Each player gets ten cards. The next card is turned face up to start the discard pile; the rest form the face-down stock.
  2. The player who didn’t deal may take the first face-up card or pass it to the dealer. If both pass, the non-dealer draws from the stock.
  3. On your turn, draw one card, from the stock or the top of the discard pile, then discard one card face up. You may not discard the card you just took from the discard pile.
  4. A meld is three or four cards of the same rank, or three or more cards in sequence in one suit, with the ace low. Cards in no meld are deadwood: aces count 1, number cards their value, and faces 10.
  5. Instead of discarding normally, you may knock when your deadwood after the discard is 10 or less. Your opponent then lays out their melds and may add their loose cards to yours.
  6. The lower deadwood scores the difference. If the defender ties or beats the knocker, that is an undercut, worth 25 plus the difference. Knocking with no deadwood is gin, worth 25 plus the opponent’s deadwood, and can’t be undercut.
  7. If only two cards remain in the stock and nobody knocks, the hand ends without a score. The first player to 100 points wins.
