About Naval Battle

Naval Battle is the pencil-and-paper fleet game for two, played on a navigator’s chart. Each player hides five ships on a 10 by 10 grid, then the players take turns calling out squares to fire at. A hit doesn’t say which ship it struck, until the last square of a ship is hit and it sinks. Play the computer at three levels, pass the device to a friend, or play online in a private room.

How to play Naval Battle

  1. Each player hides a fleet of five ships on their own 10 by 10 grid: a Carrier (5 squares), a Warship (4), a Cruiser (3), a Submarine (3) and a Destroyer (2). Ships lie straight, across or down, and may touch but not overlap.
  2. Both players place their fleets at the same time, in secret, and press Ready. Who fires first is drawn at random.
  3. On your turn, fire at one square of your opponent’s grid that you haven’t fired at. You hear miss, hit, or which ship you sank when you hit its last square.
  4. One shot per turn, hit or miss. Then your opponent fires.
  5. Sink all five enemy ships to win at once. There is no answering shot, so a match never ends in a draw.
