About Hearts

Hearts is a trick-taking game for four. Every heart you win costs you a point and the Queen of Spades costs thirteen, so you try to take as little as you can. Before each hand you pass three cards to another player, and if you are bold enough to win every point card, you shoot the moon and everyone else takes the points instead. Play the computer at three levels, pass the device around, or open a table for friends online.

How to play Hearts

  1. Four players each get 13 cards. Before each hand, everyone passes three cards: to the left, then to the right, then across, then no pass, and around again.
  2. Whoever holds the 2 of clubs leads it to the first trick. Play goes to the left, and everyone must follow the suit that was led if they can.
  3. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, aces high, and its winner leads the next. With none of the suit led, you may play anything, but not a heart or the Queen of Spades on the first trick unless you hold nothing else.
  4. You cannot lead a heart until hearts are broken: until someone has played one on a trick, or you hold nothing but hearts.
  5. Each heart you take scores 1 point and the Queen of Spades 13. Take all 13 hearts and the Queen and you shoot the moon: you score nothing and everyone else scores 26.
  6. When someone reaches 100 points at the end of a hand, the game ends, and the lowest score wins. Tied players share their place.
