About Crazy Eights

Crazy Eights is the classic family shedding game for two to five players. Each card you play must match the top of the discard pile by suit or by rank, and every eight is wild: play one at any time and name the suit that comes next. Can’t play, or would rather not? Draw a card, and play it if it fits. The first to empty their hand wins, and everyone else counts the points left in theirs. Play one hand or a match to 100 or 200, against the computer at three levels, passing one device around, or at a table online with friends.

How to play Crazy Eights

  1. Two to five players. With two, each gets seven cards; with three or more, five. The rest form a face-down stock, and its top card is turned up to start the discard pile (never an eight: an eight goes back into the stock).
  2. On your turn, play one card that matches the top card’s suit or its rank. Play moves to the left.
  3. Eights are wild: play one on anything and name the suit the next player must follow.
  4. Instead of playing, you may draw one card from the stock. If it can be played, you may play it at once or keep it; if it can’t, your turn ends. When the stock runs out, the discard pile below its top card is shuffled into a new stock.
  5. The first player to play their last card wins the hand. Everyone else counts what is left: 50 for each eight, 10 for each King, Queen or Jack, 1 for each ace, and the number for the rest. If nobody can play or draw, the lowest total wins.
  6. In a match, the hand’s winner scores everyone else’s points, and the first to reach the target wins. An optional rule makes 2s “draw two”, Queens skip the next player and aces reverse the direction of play.
