About Old Maid

Old Maid is a gentle card game of pairs and luck for two to six players. One queen is taken out of the deck before the deal, so one queen can never find a partner. Take turns drawing a face-down card from the player on your right; every pair you make goes down on its own, like socks pegged on a washing line. Run out of cards and you are safe. The last player still holding a card has the odd queen. Play the computer, pass the device around the family, or open a table for friends online.

How to play Old Maid

  1. The Queen of Clubs is taken out, leaving 51 cards. They are all dealt, one at a time, so some players may hold one card more than others.
  2. Any two cards of the same rank make a pair, such as two fives. Every pair goes down face up at once, at the deal and whenever you make one.
  3. On your turn, draw one card, without seeing it, from the nearest player on your right who still has cards.
  4. If the card pairs with one in your hand, the pair goes down. Then the turn passes to the next player on your left who still has cards.
  5. A player who runs out of cards is safe and sits out the rest of the game.
  6. When only one player still holds cards, that player is left with the odd queen and loses. Everyone else wins.
